Half of German companies are using the government's short-term work facilities, according to a survey released Thursday by the Ifo Institute for economic research, because most believe that revenue has fallen as a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Short term work is a form of state assistance that allows employers to turn employees into shorter working hours during a recession to keep them paid. It has been widely used in industries including the German automobile industry.
About 18% of companies surveyed said they wanted to cut jobs or not extend temporary contracts, IFO said. The companies surveyed said they wanted to limit public life to slow the spread of the virus for about four months.
Angela Merkel's government has launched an unprecedented rescue package for the economy. On Thursday, her conservatives and her social democratic coalition partners approved an additional stimulus package of about 10 billion euros, including more short-term workers' funds.
