Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Thursday proposed expanding the use of health insurance and forgiving some student debt in new proposals from supporters of former rival Bernie Sanders.
Biden became a presumptive Democratic candidate at the end of Sanders' campaign on Wednesday, and his party is trying to close ranks as it prepares to beat Republican president Donald Trump in the November 3 general election.
Biden's new proposal includes extending Medicare (government insurance for Americans over 65) to people over 60. He also promised to free low-income Americans in public universities and other educational institutions from student debt.
"Senator sanders and his supporters can be proud of their efforts to lay the foundation for these ideas, and at this critical moment, I am proud to be able to adopt them as part of my campaign to deal with the coronavirus crisis," Biden said in a statement.
