The French carmaker said on Tuesday that Renault workers in Spain have begun using 3D printers to make sunshades for health workers at home, a scheme that could be extended to other medical devices elsewhere.
The move echoes experiments by other automakers trying to find ways to increase the production of medical equipment for ventilators, including ventilators, but on a small scale, with severe shortages in Spain and elsewhere.
Employees repatriated as a result of the plant's closure have made about 50 mask holders, which are then made by inserting an acetate fiberboard that covers the face, the company said.
The company's engineers say it can even use 3D printers to make ventilator parts in France, which is crucial for treating patients with severe coronavirus.
PSA, another French carmaker, said it was working with Air Liquide to find ways to help the industrial gas maker increase its fan production.
