Health officials announced the first death in California, an elderly man with underlying diseases. This is the first death outside Washington state, which has 10.
In a statement, the county's public health department said the patient was presumed positive in a California laboratory on Tuesday, possibly infected on the princess cruise ship from San Francisco to Mexico from February 11 to 21.
"From the contact history investigation, it is preliminarily understood that the community exposure between the return of the patient from the cruise ship to the hospital delivered by ambulance on February 27 is extremely low," the statement said
The patient is the second confirmed case of new coronavirus in plesse County, Northern California.
Washington State Department of Health announced that the total number of confirmed cases in the greater Seattle area increased to 39, with 27 confirmed cases and 9 deaths the previous day.
Among the cases confirmed so far in the United States, the Seattle area is the region with the most cases, several of which are related to a long-term care institution for the elderly in the region.
The cumulative number of cases in New York State rose to 10 on Wednesday after three family members and a neighbor of a lawyer who had previously been diagnosed with the infection tested positive for the virus.
