The trump administration said Friday it will work to reach new trade agreements with the UK, the European Union and Kenya in the coming year, while strictly enforcing trade laws and promoting world trade organization (WTO) reform.
In its annual report to Congress, the USTR said the WTO "seriously deviated from its original mission and purpose," and stressed that the trump administration has been trying to deal with China's unfair trade policies and practices over the past year.
USTR said 2019 was "a historic year for us trade," with the government reaching trade agreements with China and Japan, and Congress Approving the US Mexico Canada agreement (usmca).
USTR also welcomed a WTO decision. In response to the long-standing dispute between the United States and Europe over the issue of Airbus (air. PA) subsidies, the WTO decision gives the U.S. government the right to impose tariffs on US $7.5 billion of EU goods.
The report said the U.S. government has also taken action on France's digital services tax and is monitoring the movements of other countries. The U.S. government said the tax on digital services will hit U.S. technology companies such as Facebook (FB. O), Google (Google. O), Amazon (AMZN. O) and apple (AAPL. O) of alphabet Inc.
