Airline companies that were novel coronavirus affected the cost reduction measures on Wednesday, and the alarm of the pandemic has exacerbated the scale of the impact of the airline industry and other first line operators.
Lufthansa AG (lhag. De) and KLM offered austerity measures, including unpaid leave and employment freeze; virgin Australia stopped seven aircraft in its fleet, and said it might cut staff for aircraft driving.
"We call on you to adjust the cost level to the lowest level to ensure safe operation," KLM chief financial officer Erik swelheim said in a message to executives. "Only 'absolutely necessary' expenditures are allowed." The news was first reported by ANP news agency in the Netherlands.
Swelheim also said in the letter that the crisis had a "very significant" impact on revenue, only part of which could be offset by lower fuel and other costs. The company then issued the letter.
