A new coronavirus outbreak in China poses a very low risk to the UK, the UK's Centre for infectious disease control said on Monday.
"Based on the available evidence, the risk to the UK is very low," said Dr Nick Phin, deputy director of the UK centre for infectious disease control. "We are working with who and other international partners to make recommendations to the NHS and will keep the situation under review."
China Central Television said late Monday that as of 18:00 on Monday, the cumulative number of pneumonia cases infected with the new coronavirus in China had risen to 224, including 217 confirmed cases and 7 suspected cases. One confirmed case was reported from Japan and South Korea, and two from Thailand. Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked to resolutely curb the spread of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus.
"People traveling to Wuhan should maintain good hand, respiratory system and personal hygiene, and if respiratory symptoms occur within 14 days, they should be treated in time," said Phin.
Hundreds of millions of Chinese will travel at home and abroad during the Lunar New Year holiday, which starts this week, making it harder to control the spread of the virus.
Authorities around the world, including the United States and many Asian countries, have stepped up screening for tourists from Wuhan.
