Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi condemned the US air strikes on Monday. The United States recently carried out air strikes against Iranian backed Iraqi militias, which may further involve Iraq in the vortex center of the conflict between the United States and Iran.
U.S. air strikes against militia groups in the kataib Hezbollah brigade in Iraq and Syria in response to the death of a civilian American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base, U.S. officials said Sunday.
Iraqi security and armed group sources said the U.S. military launched three air strikes in Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 25 members of the armed group and injuring at least 55.
"The prime minister described the U.S. attack on Iraqi armed groups as unacceptable and vicious, with dangerous consequences," the office said.
In a call with U.N. Secretary of state Antonio Guterres, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said the US air strikes were "designed to deter Iran," a state Department statement said.
The air strikes will force Iraq to reconsider its cooperation with the U.S. - led international coalition against the Islamic state, the National Security Council said in a statement.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said it would summon the U.S. ambassador to Baghdad to express the Iraqi government's dissatisfaction.
