Lorenzo fioramonti, Italy's education minister, told Reuters on Wednesday that he had resigned, failing to secure billions of euros from the government that he believed were necessary to improve the country's schools and universities.
His resignation is a blow to the ailing government, which is divided on issues ranging from eurozone reform to immigration rights.
It also highlights the problem of fioramonti's 5-star movement, which is trying to restructure, amid widespread dissatisfaction with its leader, Luigi di Maio.
Fioramonti told Reuters that he had made an "irrevocable resignation" to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on December 23.
Shortly after the five-star movement and the central left democratic party formed their cabinet in September, fioramonti said he would resign unless he increased education spending in the 2020 budget by 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion).
