Senior trade officials from Japan and South Korea met Monday for the first time since Japan imposed restrictions on the export of high-tech materials to South Korea. Export restrictions have led to a new crisis in the fragile relationship between Japan and South Korea.
Minister of trade administration of Japan's Ministry of economy, industry and trade met with trade policy officer Lee ho Hyun of South Korea's Ministry of industry in Tokyo for the first high-level bilateral talks in three and a half years.
The two sides shook hands at the beginning of the meeting and did not comment on each other or the media.
Their discussions will include Japan tightening export restrictions and removing South Korea from the trade white list.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Kan Yiwei, on Monday played down expectations of a speedy settlement of the trade dispute.
"We are looking forward to a comprehensive assessment," Mr Kan said at a press conference, suggesting it will take time to find a solution.
