EU leaders on Friday welcomed Prime Minister Johnson's victory in the election as an opportunity to end three years of brexit, but warned that negotiations on a new EU UK relationship would be tough.

Johnson's overwhelming victory in Thursday's election enabled him to deliver on his pledge to lead Britain out of Europe by the end of January.
Leaders of 27 other countries met in Brussels on Friday to call on the new British Parliament to quickly approve the brexit agreement so that negotiations on future relations can begin before the end of December next year.
"It will be very complex, involving a range of relationships, including trade, fisheries, and security and foreign policy cooperation," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a post summit press conference.
"Our biggest resistance is that we will need to clarify these issues very quickly. We need to come to a conclusion by the end of next year, and in June we need to decide whether we need to extend the consultation period. The UK has said it does not want to extend it. "
Many Europeans believe that Britain is a pragmatic free trade country. As one of the two major military powers of the EU, Britain gives the EU a greater say in global affairs.
But the EU has given up blocking brexit and instead wants to push Britain out of the EU, which has been in the EU for more than 40 years, even if the process is likely to continue for a year longer than some in the UK expect.
