French finance minister Bruno le Maire said on Sunday that France was ready to complain to the World Trade Organization about the threat of US President trump imposing tariffs on products such as French champagne.
The U.S. government recently said it may impose up to 100% punitive import duties on champagne, handbags, cheese and other French products worth $2.4 billion, after the U.S. decided that France's new digital service tax hurt us technology companies.
"We are ready to submit this to the International Court of justice, especially the WTO, because France levies a digital tax, treating us, EU, French or Chinese companies equally and without discrimination," lemell told France 3 television.
Paris has been complaining that American digital companies are not paying enough taxes on their profits in France.
In July this year, the French government decided to levy a 3% digital service tax on multinational technology enterprises, which is applicable to enterprises with annual revenue of more than 25 million euros and global annual revenue of more than 750 million euros in the field of digital services in France.
France and the European Union have said they will retaliate if US President trump delivers on the threat to impose punitive tariffs of up to 100% on French champagne, handbags and other products.
Le Maire said France is willing to discuss a global digital tax with the United States at the organization for economic cooperation and development (OECD), but it is a tax that Internet companies must pay.
