The release of a prisoner Saturday by the United States and Iran is a rare collaboration between two long-time hostile countries. The hostility between the two countries worsened after President trump took office.
Iran released Wang Xiyue, a US citizen detained for three years on espionage charges, while the US released Massoud soleimani, an Iranian accused of violating US trade sanctions against Iran.
A senior U.S. official said Washington hoped that Wang's release would lead to the release of other Americans held in Iran, a sign that Iran was willing to discuss other issues.
Trump thanked Iran on twitter for "very fair consultation" with the United States, which ultimately led to the exchange. He said the prisoner exchange showed that the US and Iraq "can reach an agreement together.".
In an earlier statement, trump also thanked the Swiss government for its assistance in negotiations for Wang's release.
