The future of Germany's ruling coalition seems to be in jeopardy after the Social Democratic Party elected a new leader who asked for policy changes, but a number of senior conservatives ruled out renegotiating the ruling agreement on Sunday.
Norbert Walter borjans and Saskia esken won Saturday's SPD leadership election. Both are left-wing and strongly criticise the alliance between the party and the Conservative Party led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose election could put Germany at a political crossroads.
If the SPD withdraws from the ruling coalition, Germany may hold elections ahead of time, or there may be a minority government in power. This could lead to political instability at a time when Germany's far right new choice Party (AFD) has become the country's third-largest party.
Walt boljans and ashken, who are co leaders of the party, want to renegotiate the coalition agreement so as to pay more attention to social justice, investment and climate policy, which makes them have different ideas with Merkel's Christian Democratic Party (CDU).
