Japan and South Korea agreed on Saturday to hold formal talks next month to further improve bilateral relations. For decades, Japan South Korea relations have been tense due to the grief of the wartime past, and the current situation has worsened due to the intensification of trade disputes.
South Korea told the Japanese government at the last minute Friday it would continue to share intelligence with it. South Korea on Saturday hailed its move as a "breakthrough" after months of deteriorating relations with Japan.
However, there is no sign of a fundamental shift in positions on both sides, which means that half a century of hatred between the two countries may remain elusive.
"We spent a lot of time in a heated discussion, but we didn't have much time left." South Korean foreign minister Kang Jinghe told reporters.
She made the remarks after meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister mauki minchong during Nagoya's attendance at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting.
MaoMu minchong had previously said that he hoped to discuss the issue openly.
"I would like to have a frank exchange of views on the issue of forced labor on the Korean Peninsula during World War II and other bilateral issues, which is the core issue," he told reporters in Nagoya.
