President trump on Thursday signed a bill that would extend funding to many federal departments until December 20, avoiding a partial shutdown that would have started on Friday.
The Republican led house of Representatives approved the bill early Thursday with a 74-20 vote, a government official said. The house of Representatives approved the bill by 231-192 votes, but all but a dozen Republicans voted against it.
From now until December 20, house and Senate negotiators will seek an agreement on how to allocate funds between departments. They want legislation that will allow the government to remain operational until the end of the financial year on September 30, 2020.
But these laborious tasks may be complicated by the impeachment investigation launched by Democrats in the house of Representatives against trump.
By December, the house of Representatives could have a heated debate about whether trump should be removed. The House Intelligence Committee is investigating whether trump asked Ukraine to investigate its democratic political rival, Biden, in exchange for the leaders of the two countries to meet at the White House or to release us security assistance to Ukraine.
Trump denied any wrongdoing.
