China, the world's largest soybean buyer, continues to buy U.S. soybeans, pork and beef, according to government data released on Thursday, as negotiators from the two countries struggle to negotiate details of the first phase of the trade agreement.
In its weekly export sales report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said that in the week of November 14, China agreed to buy 568573 tons of soybeans, down from 760527 tons in the previous week. Soybeans shipped to China this week increased from 693527 tons to 873573 tons.
China has been a stable buyer of U.S. soybeans since the start of Japan's sales year on September 1, and has committed to purchase 8.476 million tons of soybeans. At present, trade negotiations between the two countries continue.
By contrast, China purchased only 64799 tons of soybeans in the same period of 2018, far less than the 18.647 million tons that China agreed to buy between September and mid November 2017 before the outbreak of the trade war.
China has also increased its purchases of pork and beef from the United States, and the outbreak of swine fever in Africa has had a devastating impact on China's pig population and led to a shortage of protein.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it exported 39466 tons of pork to China last week, most of which will be shipped by 2020. 239 tons of beef were exported to China last week. Last week's shipments were 12979 tons of pork and 1134 tons of beef.
