The U.S. House of Representatives approved a temporary appropriations bill on Tuesday, extending federal temporary appropriations until December 20 to avoid a wide-ranging government shutdown later this week.
The house of Representatives approved the bill by 231-192 votes, but all but a dozen Republicans voted against it.
The bill is now before the Senate, with the goal of approving it before the current appropriations expire at midnight on Thursday. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the U.S. Senate, said Monday that the White House had hinted it would support the bill.
This is the second interim appropriations bill since September, which is needed because Congress has not yet completed a series of regular appropriations for the fiscal year beginning October 1.
