The United States is "very actively" trying to persuade North Korea (North Korea) to return to the negotiating table, South Korea's national security chief, Zheng Yirong, said Sunday. The deadline for North Korea to give the United States flexibility is the end of the year.
Zheng told reporters that South Korea "takes North Korea's deadline very seriously.".
In April, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un asked the US for more flexibility by the end of the year. North Korean officials have repeatedly warned the us not to ignore the deadline.
North Korean diplomat Jo Chol Su said Friday that the window of opportunity for normalization of relations between the DPRK and the US is getting smaller and smaller. He added that Pyongyang expects Washington to take a few steps in this direction by the end of this year.
After the failure of the working level negotiations in October, the nuclear negotiations between the US and the DPRK reached a deadlock.
"Only when senior officials negotiate and make substantial progress can the third US DPRK summit be held," Zheng said at a press conference.
"As you know, the DPRK has indicated that the end of the year is the deadline. Considering the DPRK's position, we are working closely with the US."
