Michael kratsios, chief technology policy officer of the United States, on Thursday criticized countries for "opening their arms" to China's 5g networks and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
He said Chinese companies could not be trusted because they were required by law to cooperate with the country's intelligence services. He mentioned Huawei in particular.
At a science and technology conference in Lisbon, kracios pointed out that Europe must "stand in the same position" with the United States. In May, the United States imposed export controls on Huawei and called on European countries not to use Huawei products.
"We may not agree on all aspects of science and technology policy, but we agree on the most important principles." Said kracios. He assisted in the development of U.S. technology and data policies.
However, European companies do not seem to be deterred by concerns in Washington: Huawei said last month that half of the 65 business agreements it has signed are to build 5g networks with European customers.
In a recent report on the risk of cyber attacks by state support entities, EU lawmakers did not explicitly list China and Huawei as security risks.
An EU official said that krakous met with EU competition Executive Committee vestag earlier in the day to discuss "digital issues".
In his speech, kracios reiterated the allegations made by the French newspaper Le Monde last year that Beijing had used Huawei's IT equipment to transfer data from the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa to China for up to five years.
