Only 29% of Canadians have a positive view of China, according to a poll released on Monday, and more than half of Canadians are worried about a possible cyber attack by China. At present, the diplomatic disputes between China and Canada are still deadlocked.
The survey by the University of British Columbia also found that half of Canadians do not want Huawei to play a major role in the supply of 5g network equipment.
Relations between China and Canada have been frozen since Canadian police detained Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, under an arrest warrant issued by the United States last December.
"Chill is real," the survey concluded, adding that 29% of Canadians now have a positive view of China, down from 36% two years ago, but up from 22% in February.
Even so, respondents still hope to continue business with China, and 62% support the two countries to negotiate bilateral free trade agreements.
After the arrest of Meng Wanzhou in Canada, China restricted the import of meat products and rapeseed from Canada. China has also arrested two Canadians for spying.
"There are growing concerns about China's impact on Canada, particularly cyber attacks and espionage," the investigation said.
