Chile announced on Wednesday that it would cancel hosting the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month due to street protests. The United States and China were expected to sign a trade agreement at the summit to ease the trade war that has hurt the global economy.
Chile's sudden decision left the APEC summit in chaos, and the participating countries were unprepared and had no alternative. At least 18 people have been killed in weeks of unrest over social inequality in Chile.
President Sebastian Pinera of Chile announced that he had "painfully" decided to cancel the hosting of the APEC summit and the UN Climate Change Conference (cop25) scheduled for December, concentrate on restoring law and order and advance a new social plan.
"As president of the Chilean people, I must always put the problems, interests, needs, aspirations and expectations of the Chilean people first," Pinera said in a short statement.
The APEC summit was originally scheduled for 16-17 November. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to sign a provisional trade agreement during the conference to end the 15 month trade war.
The cancellation of the summit in Chile may deprive the two leaders of the chance to meet in a neutral country in the near future, but the trump administration said it still expected to sign a trade agreement with China next month. A White House official told Reuters Chile's cancellation of the APEC summit surprised the White House.
Violent riots shut down much of Santiago and cost the subway system nearly $400 million. A total of 7000 people have been arrested and Chilean businesses have lost about $1.4 billion.
