With the EU's approval of the third extension of brexit, which was originally scheduled for March 29, there are still serious differences between the British Parliament and voters on how or even whether to withdraw.
Johnson had vowed to withdraw on October 31, and "if it doesn't work, it will work." after Congress earlier this month thwarted his efforts to get the agreement approved, Johnson called for an early election on December 12. His conservative party does not currently have a majority in Parliament.
Johnson's brief bill to hold the general election on December 12 was passed by 438 votes to 20 in the house of Commons. The bill is now before the house of Lords.
Before the vote, Johnson had said that the house of Commons was blocking the British exit, which would hinder investment decisions, thus damaging economic growth and eroding public confidence in democracy.
The results of Britain's first Christmas general election since 1923 will be highly unpredictable: the brexit will make voters tired and angry in varying degrees, while eroding their traditional loyalty to the two major parties, the Conservative Party and the labor party.
Some politicians believe that holding a general election so close to Christmas may infuriate voters. The campaign and voters going out to vote will be affected by cold winter weather and early darkness.
