Now it is almost certain that the deadline for returning to the UK, originally set for October 31, will be postponed. The outcome of the brexit is still up in the air, and British politicians are still debating how, when and even whether Britain should leave Europe.
Johnson, who vowed to lead Britain out of Europe on October 31, called for elections to end what he called a nightmare. He pointed out that at present, the British political system is in a deadlock, which leads to the failure of any form of brexit, which seriously weakens people's trust in democracy.
But just hours after the European Union agreed to Johnson's reluctant request for an extension, the British Parliament rejected his motion to hold a general election on December 12, which received only 299 votes - far less than the two-thirds majority of 424 required for the motion to be approved. Johnson's third attempt to hold an early election failed again.
After the parliamentary vote, Johnson said he would try again to find a different way to hold a general election - to pass a bill by a simple majority, bypassing the fixed term parliament bill of 2011.
"We can't keep the paralysis going, either way, we have to hold elections," Johnson told parliament. "The house of commons can't kidnap the country anymore."
To do so, Johnson needs the support of opposition parties such as the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Liberal Democratic Party.
These parties have been pushing for a general election on December 9, with the aim of ensuring that Johnson cannot again try to rush the brexit deal through Parliament.
