The European Union may agree to an elastic three-month extension on Monday, as Prime Minister Johnson was forced to ask for an extension of the time limit for brexit.
There are only three days to go before the 2300 GMT deadline of October 31, but it is still in a state of suspense because British politicians have not reached a consensus on the way, time or even whether to leave Europe.
Johnson won the prime minister's office by promising to lead Britain out of Europe by October 31 with a "no success, no mercy". But after the failure of the brexit agreement in parliament, the opposition forced Johnson to ask the EU to postpone brexit.
The 27 member states that will stay in the EU after brexit hope to reach an agreement on Monday to postpone the brexit date to January 31, while if the British Parliament approves the brexit agreement, the date may be earlier.
Diplomatic sources told Reuters that the 27 country ambassador to the European Union will meet in Brussels at 0900 GMT on Monday to agree to postpone the date of brexit by three months from October 31.
"The 27 countries are likely to reach an agreement on Monday morning to postpone the date of withdrawal of the UK to January 31," said a source close to French President Nicolas macarone. "The prospect of holding elections has been greatly enhanced."
