From the current situation, the UK is closer than ever to solving the problem of its three-and-a-half-year exit from Europe. Last week, Johnson reached an agreement with the European Union on the brexit clause, which received initial parliamentary support.
However, there are still some obstacles that need to be removed, and there are still doubts about whether Johnson can live up to his commitment to lead the UK out of Europe before October 31, "if it is not successful, it will be benevolent". Earlier, the British Parliament vetoed the government's proposed timetable for the house of Commons to quickly review and pass legislation on the brexit agreement within three days.
Speaking on twitter, EU Council president Tusk said he recommended that the leaders of the other 27 EU Member States support the extension of the withdrawal. Johnson said he did not want to postpone his exit, but had to write to the European Union to ask for an extension because of pressure from Parliament.
A senior EU diplomat said the most likely scenario would be for the EU to approve a three-month postponement of the deadline for brexit, provided that the UK agreed to early brexit if the UK Parliament could pass the brexit agreement legislation more quickly. There is also the possibility that some EU countries, mainly France, will ask for a short-term extension, perhaps only for a few days or weeks.
A spokesman for Johnson said that if the EU agreed to postpone the time limit for brexit to the end of January next year, the UK would need to hold a general election, which may be held before Christmas.
Johnson suspended the process of legislation for the brexit agreement. Earlier, the British Parliament voted on Tuesday to accept the agreement in principle, but vetoed a timetable for its passage within three days.
The government argues that a tight timetable is necessary to complete legislation by next week's deadline, but lawmakers say they need more time.
