A senior State Department official said Wednesday that the United States requires all personnel of Chinese missions and missions to the United States to notify the State Department in advance of any meetings with state, local and municipal officials and educational and research institutions.
The officials told reporters that the move was to "align" the treatment of Chinese and visiting US personnel with that of US diplomats in China. The activities of U.S. diplomats in China are restricted.
Officials said the United States did not require Chinese diplomats to obtain permission to attend any meeting, only to notify the State Department.
The requirements of the United States involve all staff members of the Chinese mission to the United States and Chinese officials on business trips.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed four tough bills on China, three of which are related to the protests in Hong Kong, and one supports the Canadian government's action on the extradition of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.
Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of China, expressed strong indignation and firm opposition to the "Hong Kong Bill of human rights and democracy" passed at the latest plenary session of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday. If the bill is finally passed into law, it will not only damage China's interests, Sino-U.S. relations, but also severely damage the interests of the United States itself. China will take strong measures against the wrong decisions of the U.S. We should firmly safeguard our sovereignty, security and development interests.
