British Prime Minister Johnson told the Cabinet that there is still hope of reaching an agreement at the last minute, as the two sides are pushing forward intensive negotiations to try to avoid the disorderly withdrawal of Britain from Europe on October 31.
"According to the Prime Minister, there is still a way to reach an agreement that protects all our interests... but there is still a lot of work to be done to achieve that goal, and we must continue to prepare for the 31 October (no agreement) exit," said a spokesman for Johnson's office.
Britain said the latest talks were "constructive" and would be further negotiated on Monday.
Johnson hopes to reach an agreement in time for approval by EU leaders at the Brussels Summit on Thursday and Friday. But he still has to persuade the divided British Parliament to pass the agreement, which he may need to work on during the rare Saturday meeting on October 19.
If he succeeds, Britain, the world's fifth largest economy, will diverge from its largest trading partner, but at the same time the mutually agreed arrangements will minimize the impact on border firms and preserve the complex supply chains that support the UK economy.
If he fails, members of Parliament will begin to fight to postpone the exit, and the fight may eventually come to court. Johnson said he would do everything he could to lead Britain out of Europe on October 31, even without an agreement - a move he believed would greatly boost his hopes for political survival.
"Much remains to be done," the European Commission said in a statement Sunday evening.
