A U.S. Chamber of Commerce official briefed by China and the United States said that despite growing friction between the two world's largest economies, it was still possible for the two sides to reach lower-level "preliminary results" agreements on exchange rates and copyright protection.
Myron Brilliant, executive vice president and President of international affairs of the National Chamber of Commerce, told reporters that negotiators were "trying to find a way to a larger agreement" to make progress on issues such as market access and less controversial intellectual property rights.
"I think it's even possible to reach a currency agreement this week. I think this may prompt the U.S. government to decide not to raise tariffs for the time being on October 15."
U.S. President Trump sent another optimistic signal to the talks. On Thursday, he tweeted that he would meet with Vice Premier Liu He, the leader of the White House negotiations with China, on Friday.
"It's an important day for negotiations with China," Trump said on Twitter. "They want to reach an agreement, but do I want to?"
On Thursday morning, U.S. Treasury Secretary Nuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Letter Hitzer greeted Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on the steps of the U.S. Trade Representative Office Building.
