Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies launched a military strike Wednesday against Kurdish militants in northeastern Syria, starting with air strikes and artillery shelling, followed by ground operations across the border.
A few days ago, U.S. President Trump pulled U.S. troops out of Syria. The move drew criticism from senior Republican figures who said Trump had abandoned Syrian Kurds, who were loyal allies of the United States.
"The Turkish Armed Forces and the Syrian National Army have launched ground operations to the east of the Euphrates River as part of the Operation of the Spring of Peace," the Turkish Ministry of Defence said in its tweet, after a day of air strikes on the area.
Turkish media reported that the army was divided into four routes into Syria, two of which were close to the Syrian town of Tel Abyad, and the other two were closer to Ras al Ain, which was more eastern.
Turkey told the United Nations Security Council in a letter seen by Reuters that its military operations would be "appropriate, prudent and responsible". The 15-member Security Council will meet on Thursday to discuss Syria at the request of the five European members, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and Poland.
The 22-member League of Arab States will hold an emergency meeting on Saturday.
Thousands of people fled Las Ain to Hasaka province, occupied by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF said at least five civilians and three SDF fighters were killed and dozens more were injured in Turkey's air strikes.
