Harvard University is a notoriously difficult school, according to the quartz financial network of the United States on September 24. In the recent recruitment cycle, the admission rate was only 4.5%. But if your parents are Harvard graduates or you're an athlete, it's much easier to get a seat at this respected Ivy League school -- a fact that benefits white applicants even more.
In the Six Admission cycles from 2014 to 2019, 43% of white students admitted to Harvard were either parents of Harvard graduates, children of athletes, faculty members or students on the dean's wish list - a donation from their relatives to Harvard University, according to a new study. The list of donated applicants did not exist until 2018.
By contrast, only 16% of African, Asian or Hispanic students enrolled fall into the above categories.
The study, written by economists Peter Alchidiacono, Josh Kingsler and Taylor Som, has yet to be published or peer reviewed. But these data come from data published under the Student Fair Entrance Act. The reason for publishing the data is that Asian-American students have filed a lawsuit alleging that Harvard discriminated against them on racial grounds in the admission process.
