On Tuesday, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi responded to criticism of the United States by saying that China had no intention of "playing a game of power on the international stage" while respecting the interests of the United States, but did not accept threats in trade negotiations or allow interference in domestic affairs, including Hong Kong.
Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Wang Yi called on the two world's largest economies, China and the United States, to abandon confrontation, saying that the two countries should cooperate to benefit both sides and the rest of the world.
Earlier Tuesday, President Trump severely condemned China's trade practices at the United Nations General Assembly, saying that a "bad agreement" would not be accepted in Sino-US trade negotiations.
Trump tried to pressure China to agree to lower trade barriers by raising tariffs on Chinese imports. He accused China of "large-scale" theft of trade secrets and claimed that China had taken advantage of the provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to obtain preferential treatment as a "developing country".
At an event organized by the U.S. -China Trade National Committee (USCBC), Wang Yi said that China hoped that the next round of trade negotiations with the United States in October would yield positive results.
