Trump told reporters at the White House that this was China's "major initiative" and a positive gesture before the meeting between trade negotiators of the two countries in Washington.
In a statement posted on its website, the Ministry of Finance said Wednesday that China announced the first list of 16 goods excluding tariffs on the United States and Canada, including some anticancer drugs and lubricants, as well as whey for feed and fish meal.
In May, the Chinese government said it would launch an exemption plan. At present, there is growing concern that the prolonged trade war will add to China's already slowed economy.
"They did a couple of things... that's quite good," Trump said in an event that was not related to trade. "I think it's a gesture, OK? But this is a major move.
Trump said he hoped to reach a trade agreement with China, where tit-for-tat tariffs have disrupted global markets for more than a year.
"I deal with them, I know them, I like them," he said. "I hope we can achieve something."
The deputy trade negotiators of the two countries are scheduled to meet in Washington in mid-September and hold ministerial talks in October. The exact date of the meeting has not yet been announced.
Some analysts see Beijing's move as a gesture of friendship, but do not see it as a sign that the two sides are ready to reach an agreement.
