In the automobile transmission system, the transmission plays a vital role in power transmission, which determines the power and energy efficiency of the whole vehicle. Therefore, improving the efficiency of gearbox has always been the goal of automobile manufacturers, and reducing friction in gearbox is the main means to achieve this goal. In view of this application, Schaeffler introduced a new type of angular contact roller bearing with ultra-low friction.

Bearing Arrangement Scheme of Gearbox Shafting

In the current gearbox, tapered roller bearings are mainly used as supporting bearings, which are installed in pairs at both ends of the transmission shaft. In this arrangement, in order to prevent the left and right movement of the transmission shaft, it is necessary to add a certain pre-tightening force on tapered roller bearings to play the role of positioning, but this axial pre-tightening force also increases the friction of the system. At present, many automobile manufacturers have begun to use positioning bearings and non-positioning bearings to reduce or even eliminate the axial force on positioning bearings, and further reduce the friction loss of the system.
In this positioning/non-positioning bearing arrangement scheme, deep groove ball bearings are mainly used as positioning bearings and cylindrical roller bearings as non-positioning bearings. However, as a positioning bearing, the bearing capacity of deep groove ball bearings is low. To achieve the same load as tapered roller bearings, it is necessary to increase the bearing size, which puts forward additional requirements for the system space. These characteristics of deep groove ball bearings limit the application of positioning/non-positioning bearing arrangement in gearbox.
Angular Contact Roller Bearing with High Bearing Capacity and Low Friction
In order to adopt the positioning/non-positioning bearing arrangement scheme without changing the design space, Schaeffler developed an innovative angular contact roller bearing. The structure of the bearing is similar to that of tapered roller bearings. The difference is that it adds a baffle on the outer ring, so it can bear the axial force in both directions. Because of the existence of two retaining edges, angular contact roller bearings can be used as positioning bearings. In terms of bearing capacity, unlike point contact of ball bearings, angular contact roller bearings are linear contact, so bearing capacity is higher while maintaining low friction. The simulation results show that the bearing capacity of this angular contact roller bearing is 40% higher than that of deep groove ball bearing in the same design space.
