According to Bloomberg News, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday that the Trump administration was "seriously considering" the possibility of issuing ultra-long-term bonds.
"If conditions are right, I expect that we will use long-term borrowing and put it into practice," Nuchin told Bloomberg in an interview.
According to Bloomberg, Nuchin said his renewed interest in issuing 50-year or 100-year bonds had nothing to do with the decline in short-term Treasury yields.
At present, the 30-year bond is the longest maturity bond in the United States.
Earlier this month, the Treasury asked market participants for feedback on the possibility of issuing ultra-long-term bonds. The Ministry of Finance also asked for feedback in 2017.
U.S. Treasury bond yields fell Wednesday and 30-year yields hit record lows as concerns about the recession and trade tensions between the United States and China sparked endless demand for low-risk bonds.
