South Korea summoned Japan's ambassador to South Korea to protest Japan's decision to remove South Korea from the trade white list. The decision came into effect on Wednesday and the political and economic grievances between the two countries are deepening.
Japan removed South Korea from the white list this month, which may mean that some Japanese exporters will need more documentation and on-site inspection to export goods to South Korea, which may slow down the supply of many goods.
The decision came into effect on Wednesday. The move also prompted South Korea to remove Japan from its list of trade preferential countries and terminate the intelligence-sharing agreement between the two countries.
A South Korean foreign ministry official said South Korea summoned the Japanese ambassador to make a formal protest and asked Japan to withdraw its "white list" decision.
At a meeting in Seoul, government officials agreed to provide 5 trillion won ($4.12 billion) from 2020 to 2022 to stabilize supply chains in sectors hit by the economy.
"We reiterate our call on Japan to avoid further deterioration of the situation and to respond sincerely to our proposal for dialogue to restore relations," Korean Prime Minister Lee Lok-won said at the meeting.
Relations between Japan and South Korea deteriorated at the end of last year after the South Korean Supreme Court ruled that compensation should be paid to some South Koreans who were forced to work in Japanese companies during Japan's occupation of Korea in 1910-45.
