After four hours of marathon-style talks with U.S. trade representative Lethizer, Japan's Minister of Economic Regeneration, Minchong Maki, told reporters that the two countries were "increasingly close to drawing conclusions".
But he also said that time was needed for consultation, because it involved a wide range of details, which directly affected the national interests of the two countries.
"Progress is as expected, but it took us a long time," Maki said of the talks, adding that he would meet Lethizer again on Friday.
Maki Minchong is visiting Washington, D.C. for talks with Letterheiser. The two sides hope to narrow their differences in the fields of agricultural products and automobiles so as to reach bilateral trade agreements as soon as possible.
Before Thursday's talks, they also held five and a half hours of consultations on Wednesday, indicating that negotiators are making final efforts to reach some agreement when the two heads of state meet. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Trump may meet on the sidelines of this weekend's Group of Seven (G7) summit in France.
Maki Min said he would fly directly to France, possibly joining Abe Jinsan and Trump. The two heads of state may discuss issues including trade at that time.
Asked whether the summit would reach an agreement on trade, Maki said: "We need to see what we can do tomorrow.
