North Korea's Foreign Minister Lee Yong-ho said Friday that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was a "curse" that would only complicate the denuclearization negotiations and that Pyongyang was ready for dialogue or confrontation.
Negotiations aimed at lifting North Korea's nuclear and missile program have been deadlocked since the disagreement between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over their second summit in Hanoi in February.
Trump and Kim Jong-un met again on the Korean-Korean border in June and agreed to resume working-level negotiations, but so far they have not been achieved.
Since the summit, Pyongyang has demanded that the United States replace Pompeo and reassign "more mature" candidates, while praising the harmonious relationship between the leaders of the two countries.
Li Yonghao participated in the Hanoi Summit and confronted Pompeo, the chief negotiator of the United States. He called Pompeo the "curse of American diplomacy" and only used "stale sanctions".
In a recent media interview, Pompeo said that the United States would maintain sanctions against North Korea until it took concrete action on denuclearization. Li Yonghao is referring to Pompeo's remarks.
Li Yonghao pointed out in a statement published by the Korean Central News Agency that Pompeo's false words would only disappoint the DPRK, and doubted whether he could solve any problems with such people.
