Larry Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Committee, said Thursday that the Trump administration still plans to hold a face-to-face negotiation with Chinese officials in September after constructive exchanges between Deputy negotiators of the United States and China this week.
Kudrow also said that the ongoing trade talks between Japan's Minister of Economic Regeneration, Mitsuki Maki, and U.S. Trade Representative Lettershire have made good progress on agricultural products and telecommunications issues.
"The telephone conversations between deputies are very constructive and may prompt major negotiators to meet in Washington," Kudrow said. He was referring to a telephone conversation between Deputy officials on Wednesday.
He added that deputies had agreed to hold another telephone conversation and that they were addressing key issues and would provide advice to key negotiators.
"We are still planning for the Chinese team's September visit," Kudrow said, though he would not disclose the exact date.
The trade dispute between the United States and China and the mutual tariff imposed by both sides have led to market shocks and depressed economic growth.
Earlier this month, Trump made concessions on the September 1 deadline for imposing tariffs on thousands of Chinese goods, and Chinese and American officials announced renewed trade negotiations.
But since the collapse of Sino-US trade talks in May, little progress has been made. Now some economists are worried that the trade war with China may lead to a recession in the United States, which is not conducive to Trump's re-election in 2020.
