Chief Executive Dion Weisler will resign for personal reasons. Wesler has been HP's CEO for nearly four years.
Enrique Lores, currently president of HP's Image, Printing and Solutions division, will take over his position with effect from November 1.
Hewlett-Packard shares fell 5.86% after Thursday's session, after closing down 0.16% at $18.93. Hewlett-Packard reported lower-than-expected third-quarter net revenue growth.
Hewlett-Packard said Wesler left to take care of his family's health.
"On behalf of the board of directors, we respect Wesler's decision to take care of his family," said Chip Bergh, chairman of Hewlett-Packard.
