Less than three months before Britain's withdrawal from Europe, Johnson will make his first international appearance as British Prime Minister at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Biaritz, France, on Saturday, as the domestic political crisis in Britain intensifies.
In the absence of any sign of reaching a withdrawal agreement before the deadline, Britain is on the verge of a non-agreement withdrawal chaos, thus turning its eyes to President Trump of the United States across the Atlantic in the hope of reaching a new trade agreement with the United States and gaining American support.
The three-day G7 summit will give Britain a thorough understanding of the new reality: Britain's influence in Europe has been greatly reduced and its dependence on the United States has been growing. For Johnson, who was born in New York City, this is an unacceptable situation.
Since World War II, Britain has been trying to ease the process of European integration by establishing so-called special relations with the United States. Britain's withdrawal from Europe forced Britain to deviate from this strategy.
Britain's withdrawal from Europe is not on the agenda of this meeting, but it is expected to be heated in the margins of the meeting. Leaders from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and the European Union will attend the meeting.
The British Parliament has vetoed the Teresa Mei version of the withdrawal agreement three times before. Now, on the one hand, Johnson insists on revisiting the agreement, on the other hand, Brussels says it is impossible to revisit it, so the possibility of Britain leaving Europe without an agreement is growing.
