The European Commission said Monday that the EU was ready to accept a British withdrawal without agreement, in which case Britain suffered the most.
Natasha Bertaud, a spokesman for the European Commission, said at a daily press conference that no agreement on British withdrawal would never be the EU's preferred option, adding that the Commission did not consider it necessary to prepare additional emergency measures at this stage.
"This is clearly a major disruption to citizens and businesses and a serious negative impact on the economy," Bertaud said of sudden disengagement.
"(Destructive) proportions in the UK will be much higher than in the 27 EU member states."
She quoted European Commission President Juncker as saying that if Britain did not agree to withdraw from Europe, "Britain would unfortunately become the biggest loser".
In London on Monday, the opposition Labour Party asked the British Parliament to recall from its summer recess to discuss measures to mitigate the impact of Britain's withdrawal from Europe. Previous leaked government documents predicted food, fuel and drug shortages if Britain withdrew from the EU.
