The ban is part of an overall U.S. crackdown on Huawei Technologies Ltd. Huawei is the world's largest maker of telecommunications network equipment. Washington accused the company of spying and stealing intellectual property rights.
Huawei has repeatedly denied that it is under the control of the Chinese government, the military or intelligence agencies. The company has filed lawsuits against the U.S. government over many restrictions in the U.S. Defense Policy Act.
The ban includes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), passed last year, which restricts the use of federal funds to purchase telecommunications equipment, services and video surveillance equipment from telecommunications companies involved in the ban on national security grounds.
In a statement, Huawei said it "continues to challenge the constitutionality of the ban in federal courts."
A spokesman for Haikangwei, another of the five companies, said the company was committed to abiding by the laws and regulations of the country in which it operated. The spokesman said that Haikangwei "has made efforts to ensure that the safety of our products meets the requirements of the U.S. government."
Two other companies, ZTE Communications and Hainengda, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday. Dahua Technologies, the fifth company, was not immediately available for comment.
U.S. government contractors say they are confused about the scope of the ban and its impact on business.
The first provision for the implementation of the ban was posted on a contractor's website, Acquisition.gov, operated by the United States General Administration (GSA), which is responsible for the contract. This provisional provision will come into force on 13 August.
