Iranian media reported Sunday that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) seized a fuel-smuggling Iraqi tanker and seven crew members in the Persian Gulf, an incident that showed its intention to show strength as tensions between Iran and Western countries intensified.
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said the tanker was intercepted near Iran's Fars Island. Fars Island is located north of the Strait of Hormuz, where IRGC has a naval base.
"The IRGC Navy has seized a foreign tanker smuggling for some Arab countries in the Persian Gulf," IRGC commander Ramezan Zirahi told state television.
The Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency quoted IRGC as saying that it was an Iraqi ship that was detained in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday night.
Zirahi said the tanker was loaded with 700,000 litres of fuel. He did not specify the nationality of the detained crew.
"The Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval vessel was patrolling and controlling traffic in the area and was seized after it was found that the tanker was engaged in illegal trade activities," Fas news agency quoted Zirahi as saying, adding that the seizure was carried out in coordination with Iranian judicial authorities.
"The tanker has been transferred to the port of Bushehr and the fuel it carries has been put at the disposal of the authorities," Zirahi told television.
