On August 2, Hua Chunying presided over the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Q: President Trump tweeted yesterday that he would impose a 10% tariff on another $300 billion of Chinese imports to the United States. What's your comment? Chinese style
A: The US side said it would impose a 10% tariff on 300 billion US dollars of Chinese imports on September 1. This is a serious violation of the consensus reached at the meeting between the two heads of state in Osaka. It is not conducive to solving the problem. China is strongly dissatisfied with this and resolutely opposes it. If the U.S. tariff measures are implemented, China will have to take the necessary counter-measures to firmly safeguard the core interests of the country and the fundamental interests of the people. All the consequences arising therefrom will be borne by the U.S.side. It is not in the interests of the people of China and the United States and the people of the world to escalate trade frictions and intensify tariffs. It will have a recessionary impact on the world economy. China has always maintained that there are no winners in the trade war. We do not want to fight, but we are not afraid to fight. China will not accept any extreme pressure or blackmail, nor will we concede an inch on major principles. We hope that the United States will recognize the situation clearly, abandon illusions, correct mistakes and return to the correct track of solving problems through consultation on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
