Negotiators from the United States and China concluded a brief round of trade talks Wednesday with no obvious signs of progress. Both sides called the talks "constructive", discussed issues including China's further purchase of U.S. agricultural products, and agreed to continue negotiations in September to bring the world's two largest economies together. The unstable truce has been extended for at least a month.
This week's talks are the first face-to-face trade talks since the truce agreement was reached at the G20 summit last month. Negotiators from both sides held a working dinner at the historic Peace Hotel on the Bund on Tuesday and held only half-day talks on Wednesday.
At the end of the group photo session around 1:45 p.m., a convoy of American Trade Representative Letter Heyzer, Treasury Secretary Nuchin and other American officials left the West Suburb Hotel in Shanghai. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He waved goodbye to them. The photo session was about 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
A U.S. government official told Reuters that U.S. government officials went directly to the airport.
"The talks were constructive and we look forward to continuing negotiations on an enforceable trade agreement in Washington in early September." White House spokesman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.
Shortly after the U.S. delegation left Shanghai, the Ministry of Commerce of China said in a statement: "During the twelfth round of high-level economic and trade consultations between China and the United States, the two sides had frank, efficient and constructive in-depth exchanges on major issues of common concern in the field of economy and trade."
It is unclear what agricultural products China has agreed to buy further from the United States, if any, and when. After President Trump of the United States said that China had not fulfilled its commitment to buy agricultural products, the issue became the focus of debate.
"China has confirmed its commitment to increase purchases of U.S. agricultural exports," White House spokesman Grisham said, without providing other details.
