Olaf Scholz, Germany's Deputy Prime Minister and finance minister, said Wednesday that he was highly sceptical about the request of the United States to participate in military operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. proposal to strengthen protective measures in the Persian Gulf Strait of Hormuz comes at a time when tensions between the United States and Iran are rising. About one fifth of the world's oil is transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. Embassy in Berlin said the United States had formally asked Germany to join a joint French-British operation to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz and to "confront Iranian aggression".
"I have high suspicions about this, and I think many people have the same suspicions," Schultz said.
