During a visit to Brazil Tuesday, Wilbur Ross, the U.S. commerce secretary, said the U.S. government might respond next week to companies applying for special permission to sell products to Huawei in China.
Ross said he would stay in Argentina and Peru in the next few days and expected that when he returned to the United States, the decision on permission would be "made".
The Trump Administration warned Huawei that it might become a tool for Chinese espionage and put the company on the so-called "entity list", meaning that U.S. companies now need to apply for special permission to do business with the telecom giant.
The decision on licensing will provide guidance for U.S. companies in urgent need of clear policies. Earlier, US President Trump promised at the end of June that there would be some relaxation in the policy of dealing with Huawei and American enterprises.
Trump officials met with Chinese negotiators in Shanghai this week to restart trade negotiations that broke out in May.
