Former British Foreign Secretary Johnson said Monday that he was serious about leading Britain out of the EU in October even without an agreement with the EU.
Johnson is still in the lead in the prime minister's race, but his late-night fight with his girlfriend and the news that alarmed the police at their door weakened the lead.
On Monday, his opponent, Jeremy Hunt, the current foreign minister, described Johnson as a coward, avoiding a public face-to-face debate with him.
Johnson did not comment on this statement in an interview with the BBC. Instead, he emphasized his commitment to withdraw in October without agreement if necessary - a prospect that has plunged the pound.
"My commitment is to withdraw from the EU on Halloween on October 31," Johnson said.
"Let our friends and partners know how serious we are, and ultimately give up the defeatism and negative emotions that have surrounded us for a long time, and be confident in preparing for the outcome of... no agreement."
Johnson said he did not want to leave Europe without an agreement, but it was necessary to put options in order for Britain to get the results it wanted.
