Industry sources said Iranian oil minister Shamani met with Russian energy minister Nowak in Iran on Monday. This has led to expectations that progress will be made in resolving when the next policy meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies will be held.
OPEC and other oil-producing countries, known as OPEC+Oil Production Alliance, have considered postponing the Vienna Production Policy Conference from June 25-26 to July 3-4 since last month.
Sources have said Nowak advocates postponing the meeting until early July to avoid collision with the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Japan at the end of June, while Shangani wants to maintain the original plan.
SHANA, Iran's oil ministry news agency, reported that after the meeting, Shangani said he still disapproved of the meeting in early July, but that he might attend if the meeting was changed to 10-12 July.
An industry source said that more coordination work was needed to make the meeting a success, because all OPEC + countries were asked and the date of the meeting was agreed.
After the meeting, the Russian Ministry of Energy issued a statement saying that the two ministers also discussed cooperation within the OPEC framework agreement.
